Dear Newfound College Parents, Do Not Rescue Your Children

“Roughly 8 out of 10 of us will get a phone call from a super miserable college kid. Like, flat out miserable. They will be friendless, homesick, overwhelmed, unsure of their every decision and certain things will never get better. Sit with them, coach them, pray for them, but make them stay on that train. It will be one of the hardest things you have ever done.”

‘Every year, every milestone, is wrapped up in this image of an almost-man, walking out my front door.’: Mom to all-grown-up son urges ‘don’t blink, take in every moment’

“It’s just a stepping stone. A step away from the past. The past when I held him in my arms. A step closer to the future. The future when I have to let go. I can still see my little boy with his Spiderman backpack on his first day of kindergarten. I still see my baby on the first day he was placed in my trembling arms.”

‘I need to let you in on a secret. There is a block of time known as the ‘witching hour.’ Mom hilariously recaps these ‘God forsaken hours’ where kids ‘whine,’ ‘amp up their crazy’ and ‘there may be blood’

“Now is typically when you, my love, call and say you’re running late and will be home ‘soon.’ WELL ‘SOON’ ISN’T GOOD ENOUGH. The hours have been counted. I’ve been waiting. I’m already 6 feet past the end of my rope, and bedtime can’t come fast enough. I need relief. IT’S YOUR TURN.”

‘She’s been promising her baby to 4 other families.’ We’d been scammed by our birth mother. Tears streaming, I hoped it was a bad dream. All I wanted was to be a mother.’

“At that same ultrasound, while holding the hand of another adoptive mother, she was texting me details of the visit and sex of the baby. She’d ‘panic’ and ask for more money so she wouldn’t change her mind and take him away from us. She knew all about me and my infertility. She knew exactly what she was doing.”

‘Doctors told me I was ‘lying.’ I hadn’t started my period. Before I took the birth control, I took a pregnancy test. It was POSITIVE!? We bought 5 more tests. All of them were positive!’

“I was having vivid, strange dreams. A neighbor said, ‘Are you pregnant?’ I said ‘no’ and cried. A switch flipped in me. I became crazy emotional. I was having day dreams about drilling a hole in my head or cutting it off. I went to doctor after doctor. They all said that it was because of my weight.”
