‘We said ‘I love you’ at 13. He didn’t care I wore a wig. He found me broken and slowly put the pieces back together.’ Woman with Hodgkin’s lymphoma falls back in love with childhood crush, conceives after infertility predictions

“I remember chunks of hair falling onto my pillow. My body transformed. It took a while to look in the mirror and see my naked face with no eyebrows, yellow eyes. Sometimes I wondered if I’d ever feel better. Then afterwards, it all hits you like a train and you sit there and literally think to yourself, ‘What the heck did I just go through and how in the world did we do it?’ Life after cancer is not easy. One side effect of chemo? Infertility.”

‘I was raped by my pastor and got pregnant. I looked at him like my father.’: Mother-daughter duo is determined to ‘inspire’ and ‘be grateful’ despite cerebral palsy, strokes, Crohn’s disease

“When I saw her, I realized she wasn’t his, she was mine. I knew I had to protect her, so my ex-husband stepped up to be her dad. We both knew my pastor would destroy her. I was also terrified of what he would do to me if I told anyone. She was born 2 months early with cerebral palsy. She was so pretty and helpless, and my body destroyed her. I knew I would do anything I could to give her the best head start possible.”

‘As a police officer, I always trusted my gut. But this time felt different. My heart was pounding, my thoughts scattering. I knew something was about to happen.’

“I slowed my breathing down and prepared for entry. As I touched the door knob…BAM! I never saw it coming! My vision was gone. I heard several loud bangs. On the radio I could hear, ‘OFFICER DOWN!’ What? ‘Wait a minute. Am I the officer down?!’ The next thing I remember I was in a weird place, swelling and turning blue.”
